One man will transcend death to seek vengeance. One woman will transform herself to gain power. And no one will emerge unscathed...

Thorvald Spear wakes in a hospital to find he's been brought back from the dead. What's more, he died in a human vs. alien war that ended a century ago. Spear had been trapped on a world surrounded by hostile Prador forces, but Penny Royal, the AI inside the rescue ship sent to provide backup, turned rogue, annihilating friendly forces in a frenzy of destruction and killing Spear. One hundred years later the AI is still on the loose, and Spear vows for revenge at any cost.

Isobel Satomi ran a successful crime syndicate, but after competitors attacked she needed power and protection. Negotiating with Penny Royal, she got more than she bargained for: Turning part-AI herself gave Isobel frightening power, but the upgrades hid a horrifying secret, and the dark AI triggered a transformation that has been turning her into something far from human…

Spear hires Isobel to track Penny Royal across worlds to its last known whereabouts. But he cheats her in the process and quickly finds himself in her crosshairs. As Isobel continues to evolve into a monstrous predator, it’s clear her rage will eventually win out over reason. Will Spear finish his hunt before he himself becomes the hunted?

Dark Intelligence is the explosive first novel in a brand new trilogy from military SF master Neal Asher and a new chapter in his epic Polity universe.

Verovatno ću stići do nje krajem marta, odokativno.

Ubrzo će nova knjiga prikvel trilogije, a Eslemont planira nov serijal o nastanku carstva.

MIDIAN UNMADE: TALES OF CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED
« Reply #2254 on: 10-03-2015, 13:13:16 »
Bemtisunce!

MIDIAN UNMADE: TALES OF CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED Edited by Joseph Nassise and Del Howison

>An all-original horror anthology set in the world of Clive Barker’s cult film masterpiece, Nightbreed, and including stories by Seanan McGuire, Amber Benson, Karl Alexander, Nancy Holder, and more!
Clive Barker’s Nightbreed has been controversial since the moment it was released in a version edited by the studio and roundly condemned by Barker, who wrote and directed the film. A virtually instant cult film, Nightbreed–based on Barker’s novella, Cabal–was nominated for three Saturn Awards and won several prizes at European film festival.
The impact of Nightbreed goes beyond the screen; along with Cabal and Barker’s seminal The Books of Blood, it has inspired many horror writers, some of whom have gathered in this tribute anthology.
Midian Unmade tells the stories of the Nightbreed after the fall of their city, Midian. Driven from their homes, their friends and family members slain before their eyes, the monsters become a mostly-hidden diaspora. Some are hunted; others, hunters. Some seek refuge. Others want revenge.
Contributors to Midian Unmade include: Karl Alexander, author of the classic novel Time After Time; actor, writer, and director Amber Benson (Tara Maclay on Buffy the Vampire Slayer); New York Times bestselling author Nancy Holder; Hugo and John W. Campbell Award-winner Seanan McGuire; Bram Stoker Award winner Weston Ochse, David J. Schow, winner of the World Fantasy Award, writer of the screenplay for The Crow; New York Times bestselling writer Stephen Woodworth; and many more–23 stories in all.
With an introduction by Clive Barker, this is an outstanding collection of original horror short stories in a dazzling variety of styles.

  • “A Return to Midian” by Lisa Majewski
  • “Moon Inside” by Seanan McGuire
  • “The Night Ray Bradbury Died” by Kevin Wetmore
  • “Another Little Piece of My Heart” by Nancy Holder
  • “The Kindness of Surrender” by Kurt Fawver
  • “The Angel of Isisford” by Brian Craddock
  • “Pride” by Amber Benson
  • “Button, Button” by Ernie Cooper
  • “I Am the Night You Never Speak Of” by C. Robert Cargill
  • “The Devil Until the Credits Roll” by Weston Ochse
  • “The Lighthouse of Midian” by Ian Rogers
  • “Lakrimay” by Nerine Dorman
  • “And Midian Whispered Its Name” by Shaun Meeks

Those Above by Daniel Polansky

Pročitavši roman do kraja, Those Above se zaista pokazao veoma razočaravajućim.
Tu dolazim i do antitolkinovštine.
Nažalost, Polanski to nije.
Nažalost, Those Above by Daniel Polansky 3/5

U Those Above je fejlovao on so many levels.

Bez mnogo pojedinosti. Nameravam da napišem detaljniji prikaz cele trilogije. Evo šta sam za sada našao:

She Who Waits by Daniel Polansky

Zainteresovan sam, ali kolika me hrpa nepročitanih knjiga čeka kod kuće, neću skorije nabavljati Polanskog.

Premda, hm, Zelazni, Sapkovski, Polanski... Ta istočnoevropska imena obično obećavaju dobru fantastiku i mame na čitanje.

Ili mršav, ravan, ćosav   i žensko. Ako uzimamo u obzir Ursulu Legvin, Robin Hob i ostale.

Operation Arcana by John Joseph Adams - prikaz I

RULES OF ENCHANTMENT—David Klecha & Tobias S. Buckell

4/5

THE DAMNED ONE HUNDRED—Jonathan Maberry

Vojna fantastika s elementima horora.
2/5

MERCENARY’S HONOR—Elizabeth Moon

2/5

THE GUNS OF THE WASTES—Django Wexler

4/5

THE GRAPHOLOGY OF HEMORRHAGE—Yoon Ha Lee

City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett

The city of Voortyashtan was once the home of the goddess of death, war and destruction, but now it’s little more than a ruin.
General Turyin Mulaghesh is called out of retirement and sent to this hellish place to find a Saypuri secret agent who’s gone AWOL in the middle of a mission.
But the ghosts of past wars have followed her there, and soon she begins to wonder what happened to the souls in the afterlife when the gods were defeated by her people, the Polis. Do the dead sleep soundly in the land of death? Or do they have plans of their own?

City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett will be published by Jo Fletcher Books in early August.

Dark Intelligence by Neal Asher

Dark Intelligence by Neal Asher 5/5 and Nightflier's Seal of Recommendation.

Deadeye (Mutant Files #1) by William C. Dietz
« Reply #2273 on: 23-03-2015, 13:59:53 »
The national bestselling author of the Legion of the Damned novels, "a must-read for any fan of Mil Fic," (Archaeologist’s Guide to the Galaxy) begins a brand new science fiction police procedural series...

In the year 2038, an act of bioengineered terrorism decimated humanity. Those who survived were either completely unaffected or developed horrible mutations. Across the globe, nations are now divided between areas populated by “norms” and lands run by “mutants”…

Detective Cassandra Lee of Los Angeles’s Special Investigative Section has built a fierce reputation taking down some of the city’s most notorious criminals. But the serial cop killer known as Bonebreaker—who murdered Lee’s father—is still at large. Officially, she’s too personally involved to work on the Bonebreaker case. Unofficially, she’s going to hunt him to the ends of the earth.

In the meantime, duty calls when the daughter of Bishop Screed, head of the Church of Human Purity, is kidnapped by mutants and taken into the red zone to be used for breeding. Assigned to rescue her, Lee must trust her new partner—mutant lawman Deputy Ras Omo—to guide her not only through the unfamiliar territory but through the prejudicial divisions between mutants and norms…

China Miéville - Three Moments of an Explosion
« Reply #2274 on: 23-03-2015, 22:41:22 »

London awakes one morning to find itself besieged by a sky full of floating icebergs. Destroyed oil rigs, mysteriously reborn, clamber from the sea and onto the land, driven by an obscure but violent purpose. An anatomy student cuts open a cadaver to discover impossibly intricate designs carved into a corpse's bones - designs clearly present from birth, bearing mute testimony to . . . what?

Of such concepts and unforgettable images are made the twenty-eight stories in this collection - many published here for the first time. By turns speculative, satirical, and heart-wrenching, fresh in form and language, and featuring a cast of damaged yet hopeful seekers who come face-to-face with the deep weirdness of the world - and at times the deeper weirdness of themselves - Three Moments of an Explosion is a fitting showcase for one of our most original voices.

No matter your expectations, the dark is full of the unknown: grim futures, distorted pasts, invasions of the uncanny, paranormal fancies, weird dreams, unnerving nightmares, baffling enigmas, revelatory excursions, desperate adventures, spectral journeys, mundane terrors, and supernatural visions. You may stumble into obsession—or find redemption. Often disturbing, occasionally delightful, let The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy and Horror be your annual guide through the mysteries and wonders of dark fiction.

Clash of Eagles (The Clash of Eagles Trilogy) by Alan Smale

Perfect for fans of action-adventure and historical fiction—including novels by such authors as Bernard Cornwell, Steve Berry, Naomi Novik, and Harry Turtledove—this stunning work of alternate history imagines a world in which the Roman Empire has not fallen and the North American continent has just been discovered. In the year 1218 AD, transported by Norse longboats, a Roman legion crosses the great ocean, enters an endless wilderness, and faces a cataclysmic clash of worlds, cultures, and warriors.

Ever hungry for land and gold, the Emperor has sent Praetor Gaius Marcellinus and the 33rd Roman Legion into the newly discovered lands of North America. Marcellinus and his men expect easy victory over the native inhabitants, but on the shores of a vast river the Legion clashes with a unique civilization armed with weapons and strategies no Roman has ever imagined.

Forced to watch his vaunted force massacred by a surprisingly tenacious enemy, Marcellinus is spared by his captors and kept alive for his military knowledge. As he recovers and learns more about these proud people, he can’t help but be drawn into their society, forming an uneasy friendship with the denizens of the city-state of Cahokia. But threats—both Roman and Native—promise to assail his newfound kin, and Marcellinus will struggle to keep the peace while the rest of the continent surges toward certain conflict.

Praise for Clash of Eagles

“Just when it seems there is nothing new in [alternate] history comes this debut.”Library Journal (starred review)

“An intriguingly original alternate history.”Kirkus Reviews

“Authoritatively researched, compellingly told, and with pleasing echoes of L. Sprague de Camp, Clash of Eagles is a modern masterpiece of what-if speculation.”—Stephen Baxter, Philip K. Dick Award–winning author of The Time Ships

“Alan Smale has done remarkable work with the world-building in Clash of Eagles, dropping the sole Roman survivor of a massacre into the complex civilization of the Cahokian Native Americans in the thirteenth century. Yet what follows is more than a standard clash of cultures yarn, for there are other forces in play in this alternate North America, and Marcellinus knows his imperial masters will send more legions to replace his lost men. Can the determination and ingenuity of one man change the fate of a continent? I’m eager to find out.”—Harry Turtledove, New York Times bestselling author of How Few Remain

“My favorite kind of alternate history: epic, bloody, and hugely imaginative.”—John Birmingham, author of Without Warning

“Clash of Eagles is epic in its sweep, exciting in its narrative, and eyeball-kick sharp in its details.”—Nancy Kress, Nebula and Hugo Award–winning author of Beggars in Spain

Old Man's Ghosts by Tom Lloyd

Some men can never outrun their ghosts.

Enchei thought he'd found a home at last - a life of quiet obscurity far removed from the horror of his military days. After a decade in the Imperial City his mistakes have been few, but one has now returned to haunt him.

As Narin's pregnant lover comes to term, life has never been so perilous. There couldn't be a worse time for a nightmare to be unleashed on the Imperial City, but luck's rarely been on Narin's side.

Once, Enchei swore he'd take his own life rather than let his past catch up with him, but now it's not just his own in the balance. Demons, rogue mages and vengeful noblemen haunt the city - and a man's ghosts are always watching and waiting...
Nastavak odličnog prošlogodišnjeg The Moon's Artifice.

A Darker Shade of Magic (A Darker Shade of Magic, #1) by V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once  there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between  royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure'.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped

THE BEST SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY OF THE YEAR, VOLUME 9 Edited by Jonathan Strahan

Jonah Murtag is an Acolyte on the New Bethlehem police force. His job: eradicate all heretical religious faiths, their practitioners, and artefacts. Murtag’s got problems – one of his partners is a zealot, and he’s in love with the other one. Trouble at work, trouble at home. Murtag realizes that you can rob a citizenry of almost anything, but you can’t take away its faith. When a string of bombings paralyzes the city, religious fanatics are initially suspected, but startling clues point to a far more ominous perpetrator. If Murtag doesn’t get things sorted out, the Divine Council will dispatch The Quints, aka: Heaven’s Own Bagmen. The clock is ticking towards doomsday for the Chosen of New Bethlehem. And Jonah Murtag’s got another problem. The biggest and most worrisome… Jonah isn’t a believer anymore.

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
« Reply #2288 on: 30-03-2015, 11:56:50 »

A missing God.
A library with the secrets to the universe.
A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away.

Carolyn's not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts.

After all, she was a normal American herself once.

That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father.

In the years since then, Carolyn hasn't had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father's ancient customs. They've studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they've wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God.

Now, Father is missing—perhaps even dead—and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation.

As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own.

But Carolyn has accounted for this.

And Carolyn has a plan.

The only trouble is that in the war to make a new God, she's forgotten to protect the things that make her human.

Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters and propelled by a plot that will shock you again and again, The Library at Mount Char is at once horrifying and hilarious, mind-blowingly alien and heartbreakingly human, sweepingly visionary and nail-bitingly thrilling—and signals the arrival of a major new voice in fantasy.

In Darujhistan, the city of blue fire, it is said that love and death shall arrive dancing. It is summer and the heat is oppressive, but for the small round man in the faded red waistcoat, discomfiture is not just because of the sun. All is not well. Dire portents plague his nights and haunt the city streets like fiends of shadow. Assassins skulk in alleyways, but the quarry has turned and the hunters become the hunted.  Hidden hands pluck the strings of tyranny like a fell chorus. While the bards sing their tragic tales, somewhere in the distance can be heard the baying of Hounds...And in the distant city of Black Coral, where rules Anomander Rake, Son of Darkness, ancient crimes awaken, intent on revenge. It seems Love and Death are indeed about to arrive...hand in hand, dancing.  A thrilling, harrowing novel of war, intrigue and dark, uncontrollable magic, Toll the Hounds is the new chapter in Erikson's monumental series - epic fantasy at its most imaginative and storytelling at its most exciting.

Dočekasno april i svašta nešto zanimljivo. Za početak,

The Age of Scorpio by Gavin G. Smith

A fast-moving SF thriller set in a uniquely dark future from a new voice in the tradition of Peter F. Hamilton and Richard Morgan
Of all the captains based out of Arclight only Eldon Sloper was desperate enough to agree to a salvage job in Red Space, and now he and his crew are living to regret his desperation. In Red Space the rules are different. Some things work, others don't, it's best to stick close to the Church beacons. Don't get lost, because there's something wrong about Red Space. Something beyond rational. Something vampyric. Long after The Loss, mankind is different. We touch the world via neunonics. We are machines, we are animals, we are hybrids. But some things never change. A Killer is paid to kill, a Thief will steal countless lives. A Clone will find insanity, an Innocent a new horror. The Church knows we have kept our sins. Gavin Smith's stand-alone new science fiction novel is an epic slam-bang ride through a terrifyingly different future.

A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall

A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall

What begins as a typical revenge story veers into an epic tale of invasion, civil war, and divine incursion in the apparent first of a series by a pseudonymous author.
More than 20 years ago, Gen. Cobalt Zosia, her Five Villains, and her peasant army assassinated King Kaldruut of the Crimson Empire and placed Zosia on the throne. When the nobles and the merchants actively sabotaged her efforts to create a more equitable society, she faked her death, married a courtesan, and lived a happy, peaceful life in the rural village of Kypck…until a brash, inexperienced colonel ordered his regiment to slaughter everyone in Kypck except for her. Zosia immediately embarks upon a campaign against the one she’s sure is responsible—the current ruler, Queen Indsorith. But as the Crimson Empire faces conflict between the queen and the power-hungry Church of the Burnished Chain, unrest with a rival empire, and a new outlaw army headed by a rebellious princess posing as Zosia, can the aging bandit really be sure as to the identity of her foe? The famous warrior violently forced out of retirement and thrust into renewed conflict has been done many times and in many genres, and for a good portion of the book, there seems to be little to distinguish this from its predecessors. But it gradually becomes clear that Marshall is playing a wider and more interesting game. Ultimately, Zosia isn’t truly the protagonist (or at least, not the only one) nor the primary catalyst for events, which lends the story greater potential, both here and in future volumes.

A promising start.

I možda je ženski protagonista homoseksualne orijentacije pravi put. Uostalom, ubeđen sam da 90% muške populacije u našem divnom patrijarhalnom društvu  nema ništa protiv lezbo pornića. :D
