Superzabavan roman, uz to i besplatan!

And every life became
A brilliant breaking of the bank,
A quite unlosable game.

Uf... Evo šta Amazon ima da kaže:

Quote
Noted short story writer Bacigalupi (Pump Six and Other Stories) proves equally adept at novel length in this grim but beautifully written tale of Bangkok struggling for survival in a post-oil era of rising sea levels and out-of-control mutation. Capt. Jaidee Rojjanasukchai of the Thai Environment Ministry fights desperately to protect his beloved nation from foreign influences. Factory manager Anderson Lake covertly searches for new and useful mutations for a hated Western agribusiness. Aging Chinese immigrant Tan Hock Seng lives by his wits while looking for one last score. Emiko, the titular despised but impossibly seductive product of Japanese genetic engineering, works in a brothel until she accidentally triggers a civil war. This complex, literate and intensely felt tale, which recalls both William Gibson and Ian McDonald at their very best, will garner Bacigalupi significant critical attention and is clearly one of the finest science fiction novels of the year.

This complex, literate and intensely felt tale, which recalls both William Gibson and Ian McDonald at their very best, will garner Bacigalupi significant critical attention and is clearly one of the finest science fiction novels of the year. --Publishers Weekly

Bacigalupi is as unflinching in his examination of the unthinkable cruelty, humiliation and banal evil that humanity inflicts on the Other as he is on the bleak future that our mass consumption society will inevitably unleash. In his fictional vision, there will be no miraculous rescue from our moral or environmental sins. The Windup Girl will almost certainly be the most important SF novel of the year for its willingness to confront the most cherished notions of the genre, namely that our future is bright and we will overcome our selfish, cruel nature.

Najpre najperverzniji:

The Elder Scrolls: The Infernal City by Greg Keyes

Quote
Four decades after the Oblivion Crisis, Tamriel is threatened anew by an ancient and all-consuming evil. It is Umbriel, a floating city that casts a terrifying shadow–for wherever it falls, people die and rise again.

And it is in Umbriel’s shadow that a great adventure begins, and a group of unlikely heroes meet. A legendary prince with a secret. A spy on the trail of a vast conspiracy. A mage obsessed with his desire for revenge. And Annaig, a young girl in whose hands the fate of Tamriel may rest . . . .

Based on the award-winning The Elder Scrolls, The Infernal City is the first of two exhilarating novels following events that continue the story from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, named 2006 Game of the Year.

Quote
For years he has endured the endless trials and triumphs of a man whose skill and power could not be restrained. Battling ancient enemies, forging new alliances, and confronting the corruption within his own land, Gaius Octavian became a legendary man of war-and the rightful First Lord of Alera.

But now, the savage Vord are on the march, and Gaius must lead his legions to the Calderon Valley to stand against them-using all of his intelligence, ingenuity, and furycraft to save their world from eternal darkness.

The Silver Mage: Book Four of the Silver Wyrm  by Katharine Kerr.

Code: [Select]
The Horsekin are assembling along Prince Dar's northern border, and the Deverry alliance simply does not have the men and resources to prevent their enemies from moving into the wilderness areas known as the Ghostlands. But suddenly, the Dwrgi folk and the dragons come to Dar's aid, tipping the balance in their favor and offering Dar's people a chance to defeat the Horsekin once and for all.

Nightflieru, molim te prosvetli me po pitanju jednog izdanja. Mono i Manjana, serijal "Recni sliv tmine", Son Rasel: imaju prvi deo "Stazama i dvoranama podzemlja" i "Kompas duse".

Ovako.

Elves: Once Walked with Gods - Barkli je baš loš pisac.

Way of Kings je repriza.

Do kraja godine stižu im dve pošiljke novih knjiga i proširuju sffh odeljak.

Trebalo bi da dobijem hrvatsko izdanje Harrison, Harry • The Stainless Steel Rat. Jel si čito? Utisak?

Sad sam nabavio sve tri do sada objavljene The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year, ali nemam kada da ih čitam.

The Rats and the Ruling Sea by Robert V. S. Redick

The Rats and the Ruling Sea picks up where the first volume, The Red Wolf Conspiracy left off:

Thasha's wedding is hours away. It is a wedding that will both fulfill the promise of a mad god's return and see her murdered. Pazel has thwarted the sorcerer who would bring back the god but both sides now face deadlock. Can Thasha be saved? Can the war between two Empires be stopped?

The Rats and the Ruling Sea is, once again, focused on the giant ancient ship The Chathrand, but now she must brave the terrors of the uncharted seas including massive storms, ship-swallowing whirlpools and lands forgotten by the Northern world, all the time involved in a vicious running battle with a ship nearly her match…

Robert Redick's new novel takes the reader further into the labyrinthine plots and betrayals that have underscored the trilogy from the beginning. Along the way, we will learn more about the Ixchel as they fight for survival against the Chathrand's rats, discover more about the true motives of the conspirators, live with Thasha and Pazel as they face death & deceit, and journey with The Chathrand as it sails into the infamous Ruling Sea…

Novi Simons:

Black Hills is an important and revelatory novel, the most singular accomplishment to date by the always unpredictable Dan Simmons. With empathy and great narrative power, it illuminates a significant chapter in the nation's history, and takes us deep into the heart of an extraordinary American life.

The story begins at the Battle of Little Big Horn in June of 1876. Eleven-year-old Paha Sapa (whose name, in the Lakota dialect, means "Black Hills"), is present at the precise moment of Custer's death, a moment that will have enormous ramifications. The narrative that follows encompasses eighty years of highly charged history and ranges from the eponymous (and sacred) Black Hills of South Dakota to the Dust Bowls of the Great Depression to the emerging face of Mount Rushmore, where an astonishing revelation awaits.

On one level, Black Hills is a story of profound and inescapable loss: of family, of cultural heritage, of the ancient gods that once dominated the Lakota's world. On another, it is a visionary account of love, hope, and unexpected discovery, and a meditation on the Mystery that lies "at the heart of the heart of the universe." Absorbing, moving, and constantly surprising, Black Hills is, by any standard, a major novel, another landmark achievement in a constantly evolving career.

Teror me jos uvek ceka, Drood ne znam ni da li cu citati, ovo deluje zanimljivije, ali.........................................

Divine Misdemeanors by Laurell K. Hamilton

Laurell K. Hamilton on Divine Misdemeanors

Meredith Gentry was created as a character so that my muse and I could have a break from writing the Anita Blake series. I’d written five Anita books in a row and was starting to have job anxiety dreams about her life instead of mine. I needed something different for my muse and me to play with. Merry was created to give me a different voice, a different world to visit. I guess she’s like a second child that you have so the first one won’t be an only. Then, like a parent that just didn’t understand that a second child doesn’t double your workload, but quadruples it, I was suddenly trying to do two different series at two different publishers. It went well since they’re both New York Times bestsellers. The audience for both crosses nicely and continues to grow with every book in a time when very few authors can say that. So it’s all good, but just like trying to juggle two kids instead of one, juggling two book series instead of just one presents its challenges.

At the beginning keeping Anita’s voice out of the Merry books was the biggest challenge. I was used to her, and her voice and attitude were closer to my own, so Anita wrote faster, clearer in my head. Merry was that second baby that is nothing like your first baby, so most of what you learned about taking care of character A doesn’t help a damn bit with character B. Who knew? But there comes a point when you make peace with the second child being so different from the first and so different from yourself. You find the unique joys in that second person, as I’ve found the joys in the Merry series that are different from Anita.

Anita fights me on paper and always has. She’s very much my rebel. Merry never fought on paper until the last book, Swallowing Darkness, and then she found things worth fighting for. She finally stood up and told me what she wanted and she was willing to do whatever it took to get there. I understood that. I let Merry’s desires, loves, and choices change where I had planned to end the first cycle of the series. Anita has thrown out entire last thirds of books by her choices, and even scrapped entire novel ideas because she’d simply grown in a different direction. If I did that for my oldest creation, how could I not do the same for my youngest creation?

In fact, Merry found her voice so pure and clear that on the last two Anita Blake novels I’ve had to chase her out of my head so Anita could be loud. Now the biggest challenge is balancing the writing schedule between two bestselling series, two different publishers, and that thing called a real life. Doing justice to my two imaginary worlds, and still managing to have a life in the real world... that’s the true challenge.--Laurell K. Hamilton

"Dobri stari demon" Majkla Kerija

The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year: Volume 4

With the manuscript safely in the hands of the publisher in San Francisco, I can now reveal the final table of contents for The Best Science Fiction & Fantasy of the Year: Volume 4. As anthologists always do, I wish I’d had more space to include other stories that I loved, but I think that these selections are very strong.

28.  A Delicate Architecture, Catherynne Valente (Troll’s Eye View)
29.  The Cat That Walked a Thousand Miles, Kij Johnson (Tor.com)
Recommended Reading

Eagle-eyed readers will note one of the spots is blank.  This isn’t an error. I’ve agreed not to publicise one of the stories until the book comes out, so that publication here doesn’t step too badly on the toes of its original publisher. I will, however, reveal the omitted story in March.  And yes, if space permits, there will be a Recommended Reading list in the book for the first time ever. If it doesn’t make it for length reasons, I’ll make sure it’s published online.  You can pre-order the book at Amazon.com here.

A u istom paketu stigao je i Horton. Evo najave i za njega:

“A Story, with Beans” by Steven Gould, Analog, May
“Child-Empress of Mars” by Theodora Goss, Interfictions 2

Congratulations to all the authors, and publishers who made this possible.

Boldovao sam preklapanja.

U.S. border guards arrest author Peter Watts
Kristin Rushowy Staff Reporter
Published On Sat Dec 12 2009

For Peter Watts, life can be stranger than science fiction.

Watts – who has written six such books – was on his way back to Toronto last Tuesday after helping a friend move to the U.S. Before crossing the Blue Water Bridge into Sarnia, American customs officers pulled him over. He says when they began rifling through his car and luggage, he got out. They ordered him back in the car; he asked what was going on.

What happened next has become the talk of the blogosphere: Watts too has waded in on it, posting that he was assaulted, punched in the face, pepper-sprayed and thrown in jail for the night, only to find that he was the one charged – with assaulting a customs officer.

Customs officials told the Star Watts was given directions "and became non-compliant...he did not follow directions and a physical altercation" ensued.

An officer with the Port Huron police told the local newspaper that Watts "angrily" got out of the rental car and when he refused to get back in, they tried to cuff him and he became "aggressive." In the melee, police said, Watts "choked" a customs officer.

"As a result of that he was detained and turned over to local authorities," says Ronald Smith, chief customs and border protection officer at Blue Water, adding officers were conducing "outbound operations" stopping and inspecting vehicles after the toll booths but before they hit Canadian customs.

Watts empatically denies any such action.

"I can state categorically that I did not choke anybody, I did not use profanity and did not raise my voice, I did not initiate any physical contact," says Watts, who is also a marine biologist with a PhD in zoology.

"All I basically did was use words to ask what was going on."

Now, friends are raising funds online to help Watts to help him cover his legal costs, which he says are overwhelming for someone who makes a living as an author.

Fellow sci-fi writer Cory Doctorow, who blogged about the incident at boingboing.net, chipped in $1,000 right off the bat – and while no one will say how much has been raised in total, friend David Nickle said it's enough to get Watts through the first hurdle. Should the case go to trial, friends will arrange a fundraiser.

"It's a bit like trying to figure out the mindset of a grizzly bear," Watts said when asked why officers attacked him.

Watts' next court appearance is Dec. 22. If eventually convicted, it's a felony charge that could see him imprisoned for two years and a possible fine of up to $2,000.

Watts had driven to Nebraska with a friend to help a retired University of Toronto professor move there, but their rental car had broken down. The two were driving a replacement car the rental agency had provided in the U.S.

After the incident, Watts' friend was arrested and interrogated, but not charged.

Watts, however, spent the night in jail, in the standard orange jumpsuit, and was released the next day on $5,000 bail. He was dropped off across the border at Canadian customs, without his coat – it was in the car, which was impounded – during a winter storm.

Watts is overwhelmed by the online donations, and jokes that while most people must be supportive, "it's quite possible that some people think I'm a ...jerk, but they hate homeland security more."

If more money is raised than he needs, it will be donated to charity, he said.

Among the many comments posted at boingboing.net, are some suggesting Watts must have had an attitude when dealing with customs.

"The question is what is attitude?" he said. "I've been told by cops in the system that the mere act of getting out of a car, the mere act of taking any action at all, not simply responding to an order...is considered attitude...what they take offence to is not necessarily what anyone else would find offensive."

Shhhh. The secret is out.

Fantasy is more than just sword-and-sorcery novels of epic adventures. Here are innovative tales where mythology, fairy tales, and archetypes are re-imagined into a new style of storytelling.

Anthologist Peter S. Beagle knows fantasy. The author of the inventive fantasy novel, The Last Unicorn and the introduction to The Lord of the Rings now introduces the gifted writers that returned to the classics and throughly redefined the genre: Gregory Maguire, Francesca Lia Block, Robert Holdstock, Patricia McKillip, and Steven Millhauser, and others who have lead the way to expanding imaginative frontiers.

From the depths of an dangerous English forest to the top of the Tower of Babel, on a caffeinated journey to the empire of ice cream and in front of a television with the Lone Ranger and Tonto, discover The Secret History of Fantasy.

Trade paperback / 432 pp. / 6 x 9 / $15.95 / September 2010 / 978-1-892391-99-5
