Dejvid Vingrov se vratio svom kultnom SF serijalu, i to sa prikvelom. Novi i relativno mali izdavač, kako mi je rečeno, priprema reizdanje celog serijala, uključujući i prerađenu završnicu, koja je izvorno objavljena osakaćena, zato što pređašnji izdavač nije hteo da objavi tako obimnu knjigu.

Most of all, Williams understands the technology, the people who use it, the strengths and weaknesses of it. Social media as a tool of both revolution and manipulation. Cyberwar attacks on nation states, seen as a sword that cuts both ways.

A damn good book, that manages to entertain and enlighten at the same time. I enjoyed it a lot. I think you will too.

Baš me zanima gde se SubPres ubraja - u manje ili veće ili srednje izdavače. Po onome što sam čuo iz razgovora sa stranim piscima & urednicima, oni veoma ozbiljno shvataju tiraže koji se kod nas doživljavaju smešnim, a cene im nisu toliko više od naših kada je reč o HC trejdovima. Četr'es' dolara mu dođe oko 35 eura, što bi bilo tek nešto više od cene po kojoj bi se tako nešto izvelo u Srbiji.

U manje, koliko ja znam. Al, pazi, i njima cene variraju, naravno, u zavisnosti od mnogo faktora. Npr. Leviathan Wept de luxe limited signed je samo 40$, a trade HC 25$. E sad, ta skuplja signed izdanja se rade uglavnom do 250 primeraka, tako da ne verujem da su standardna stampana ispod 1000 primeraka.

Ja imam nekoliko limited izdanja SubPresa, rađena u tiražu od 350 primeraka, ali ne ona superlimitirana, sa unutrašnjim ilustracijama. Ta su obično oko 80$, ali rasprodaju ih čim ih najave. I bolje tako. Možda bih se prevario da dam toliko para da ih stalno imaju u prodaji.

Unfortunately, as much as I admired the stories, I cannot give this book an unalloyed recommendation, as it is, by far, the worst example of editing and presentation that I have encountered in a lifetime of reading. The flaws start with the subtitle on the title page, which gives the dates of the stories as 1947-52. In fact, they were published between 1952 and 1955.

It wouldn't have taken the editors of the book long to research original publication data on the stories. I did it myself in a matter of minutes. Nowhere in the book is there a comprehensive list of original publication sources and dates.

There are story notes, but only for thirteen of the twenty-four previously published stories and one of the two previously unpublished or uncollected efforts. There is a nasty glitch on the contents page, in which the story "The Short Happy Life of the Brown Oxford" is apparently split into three segments and listed as if it were three separate stories.

There is no introduction to the book.

There is no editorial credit on the title page or anywhere else in the book. An inquiry to the publisher produced the answer that the executors of the Philip K. Dick Testamentary Trust provided the text as it stands.

I can only recommend that readers seek out the earlier five-volume Collected Stories, originally published in 1987, and bypass this dreadfully botched new edition. In the meanwhile, I would urge the publisher to withdraw this mess, correct the errors and omissions, and reissue the book.

Disksvet ne bi bio potpun da se na njemu nije dogodio rat između vampira i veštica. I, naravno, da li je iko siguran da prava strana uopšte postoji.

Moćan Ovas nije odabrao dobro vreme da postane sveštenik. Nameravao je da u planinsku kraljevinu Lenkr dođe radi jednostavnog religijskog obreda. Umesto toga se obreo usred rata između vampira i veštica, i nije siguran da prava strana tu uopšte postoji.

One su veštice – mlada Agnes, koja se izistinski dvoumi oko svega, Magrat, koja se trudi da uskladi veštičarenje s pelenama, Nana Og, isuviše upućena u sve živo... i Baka Vedervaks, koja donosi velike nevolje.

A vampiri su pametni – ne možete ih se lako otarasiti pomoću klizme od belog luka ili tako što ćete prići prozoru, dograbiti zavese i reći: „Zar vam se ne čini da je ovde malčice zagušljivo?“

Imaju stila; imaju otmene prsluke.

Strgli su sa sebe mrtvački pokrov i žele deo budućnosti, makar za pod jedan zub.

Dve hi­lja­de tri­de­set i če­tvr­ta. Pro­šla je još jed­na go­di­na u ko­joj po­sled­nji pri­pad­ni­ci ljud­ske ra­se po­ku­ša­va­ju da pre­ži­ve u sve­tu uni­šte­nom  nu­kle­ar­nim ra­tom. Ve­ći gra­do­vi zbri­sa­ni su sa li­ca ze­mlje, o ma­li­ma se ni­šta i ne zna. Pre­o­sta­li lju­di krc­ka­ju svo­je po­sled­nje da­ne u bun­ke­ri­ma i sklo­ni­šti­ma, od ko­jih je naj­ve­će - Mo­skov­ski me­tro­po­li­ten. Svi ko­ji su se na­šli u nje­mu dok su po pre­sto­ni­ci pa­da­le bo­je­ve gla­ve ra­ke­ta, bi­li su spa­se­ni.

Po­vr­ši­na pla­ne­te za­ga­đe­na je ra­di­ja­ci­jom i na­sta­nje­na ču­do­vi­šti­ma. Ži­vot je od sa­da mo­guć je­di­no pod ze­mljom. Čo­vek vi­še ni­je go­spo­dar na planeti. Bi­ća ko­ja je iz­ne­dri­la ra­di­ja­ci­ja ne­u­po­re­di­vo su pri­la­go­đe­ni­ja iz­me­nje­nom sve­tu. Epo­ha čo­ve­ka je za­vr­še­na.

To je svet za ko­ji ne po­sto­ji su­tra. U nje­mu ne­ma prostora za ma­šta­nja, pla­no­ve, na­du. Ose­ća­nja ustu­pa­ju me­sto in­stink­ti­ma, od ko­jih je naj­va­žni­ji - pre­ži­ve­ti. Pre­ži­ve­ti po sva­ku ce­nu.

Sta­ni­ce su pre­tvo­re­ne u gra­do­ve - dr­ža­ve, a u tu­ne­li­ma vla­da­ju ta­ma i strah. Sta­nov­ni­ci Se­va­sto­polj­ske - ma­le pod­zem­ne Spar­te, uz nad­ljud­ske na­po­re pre­ži­vlja­va­ju na svo­joj sta­ni­ci i bra­ne je.

Ali de­ša­va se da Se­va­sto­polj­ska bude od­se­če­na od ve­li­kog me­troa, i svim nje­nim sta­nov­ni­ci­ma pre­ti stra­šna smrt.

Sjajno. Ovo moram da kupim, čisto da bih malo osvežio Ruse. Ekstremno me raduje povratak ruske fantastike. Paradoksalno je što su za to najzaslužniji Ameri, ali šta da se radi.

Prošle godine je bilo bar tri naslova ruske epske fantastike primljenih više nego dobro u Americi - i svi spadaju u najjeftiniju moguću fantastiku, taman u rangu Toma Lojda i sličnih novopečenih pisaca. To ne računajući urbanu fantastiku, tipa "Noćne straže". Nije mi jasno kak Rusi ne ukapiraju da imaju više nego bogatu fantazijsku tradiciju i da ne moraju da izmišljaju gobline i orke. Doduše, valjda je to isti problem od kojeg mi patimo, pa i svaka druga kultura na kugli zemaljskoj. Naše su bajke za malu decu, pa su nam potrebni Anglosaksonci da bi nam pripovedali "bajke za odrasle".

Danas se dve knjige izdvajaju iz ponude: novi roman o Rejčel Morgan, junakinji kod nas objavljenog romana "Mrtva si, veštice" ("Laguna" je, nažalost, odustala od ovog serijala) i novi stimpank roman Kejtlin Kitredž, koja je dosta dobro prihvaćena kao spisateljica urbane fantastike.

The Iron Thorn by Caitlin Kittredge

Steampunk fans will delight in this first title in the sure-to-be-popular Iron Codex series, featuring an alternate, Victorian-flavored America tightly controlled by Proctors and driven by the Engine, an underground power source. The only girl at the prestigious School of Engines of Lovecraft Academy, Aoife Grayson is terrified that she will follow her mother and brother into the hereditary madness that strikes on the sixteenth birthday, now just a few weeks away. Determined to escape that fate, she sets off to her never-met father’s estate, with her friend Cal and a cocksure but very appealing hired guide.      Aoife Grayson's family is unique, in the worst way—every one of them, including her mother and her elder brother Conrad, has gone mad on their 16th birthday. Pale Demon by Kim Harrison

Harrison's intriguing ninth Hollows novel (after 2010's Black Magic Sanction) lives up to the earlier books, which established Harrison as a major urban fantasy player. Witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan needs to get to her brother's wedding. This leads to an uneasy alliance with her elven frenemy Trent Kalamack, who's being pushed toward Seattle by a quest. Meanwhile, Jenks the pixy is recovering from the loss of his wife, Matalina, and needs distraction. The result: "A witch, an elf, and a pixy on the Great American Road Trip" through a landscape reworked by magic, facing down terrifying foes en route. Elegant and taut as a gymnast's cartwheel, Harrison's polished prose drives a story that will have readers swerving in their seats every time Rachel turns the wheel.

The ninth Rachel Morgan novel finds our tough and feisty witch on a mission to get her shunning rescinded, which requires traveling to the annual witch convention in San Francisco. But the coven doesn’t want her to make her appointment, so they’ve put her on the no fly list, which is why she has to accept Trent’s offer of a cross-country car trip. The rich elf has his own reasons for traveling cross-country, telling Rachel and Ivy that he is on a traditional elf quest. Fans of the series will recognize that simply having Trent, Jenks, Ivy, and Rachel on a road trip is enough to make for a good story, but that is merely the beginning of an action-packed tale that finds Rachel coming fully into her demon magic powers and reevaluating her long-held impressions of Trent. Ending with hints of some major character developments and changes in Rachel’s life, this is an excellent entry that is guaranteed to satisfy Harrison’s legion of followers. (Should there be any overlap between Clint Eastwood and Kim Harrison fan clubs, that subset will certainly enjoy Harrison’s allusions here to Eastwood’s Pale Rider.) The Rachel Morgan series is fast becoming one of the hottest tickets in the urban-fantasy subgenre.

Kad smo kod Lagune, da li je u planu objavljivanje "Jazbine na nebu" Vernora Vindža? Ne znam da li da čekam ili da se okrenem braći rvatima, koji imaju jako lijepo izdanje. I poskupo pride...

Ne znam. Svojevremeno sam bio protiv objavljivanja "Plamena nad ponorom" i pokazalo se da sam bio u pravu, pošto je prodaja bila krajnje neinspirativna. "Laguna" se na jedvite jade odlučila da nastavi sa "Vorkosigan sagom", ali to samo stoga što je urednica fan. Naravno, da su me poslušali pa da krenu od Warrior's Apprentice mesto od Barajara prodaja bi bila bolja i sada bi serijal kod nas bio bar na polovini. Ali, I digress - ne verujem da će se nastavljati sa Vindžom, naročito ako se u obzir uzme da će Rejnoldsov Revelation Space uskoro iz štampe.

Jel' ovo da svrstam među Dobre-Vesti ili među Ne-Toliko-Dobre-Vesti?

Ne znam šta da ti kažem. Nisam čitao taj famozni prevod "Mehaničke devojke", a nisam ni original, tako da ne želim da sudim. Neki moji prijatelji su pročitali MD i nisu imali primedbe, mada su oni kežual riders, tako da opet ne znam šta da ti kažem. Zvali su me da uradim novi prevod, ali odbio sam pošto sam prezauzet u "Laguni", a ni ne želim da stajem na muku nekom kolegi. Ne znam da li će isti čovek da radi i prevod Ship Breakera, ali pretpostavljam da postoji mogućnost. Iskren da budem, više me zanima Baćigalupijev izlet u fentezi, pa ću pokušati da se nekako izborim da to prevodim ako se "Kombib" reši da objavi.
