Sahlin raps Malmö mayor over Jew comments

Social Democrat party leader Mona Sahlin has described as "unfortunate" comments made by Malmö mayor Ilmar Reepalu regarding a recent spate of attacks on the city's Jewish population.

Recent comments made by Reepalu have been interpreted to apportion some of the blame for a recent escalation of anti-Semitic harassment in Malmö to Jews themselves for not taking a clear enough stand against Israel's war in Gaza.

"There have been many examples of discrimination and attacks against Jews, not least in Malmö. The Jews deserve strong support and also one must never mix up the debate about anti-Semitism and Zionism," Sahlin said to journalists in connection with a visit to Södertörn University in Stockholm.

"There are a number of unfortunate comments from Ilmar that came to be interpreted in that way," Sahlin added, and underlined that she knows Reepalu well enough to know that it was not what he meant.

"There haven't been any attacks on Jewish people, and if Jews from the city want to move to Israel that is not a matter for Malmö," Reepalu told the newspaper.

    The European Court of Justice has ruled that Israeli goods produced in the Palestinian territories don't deserve a customs break. The decision affects German drinks manufacturer Brita.

    The EU's highest court ruled Thursday that goods produced by Israeli companies based in the Palestinian territories do not qualify for duty-free import into the European Union.

    An EU deal with Israel allows the country's industrial products to be imported to Europe without customs duties. A similar deal with the Palestinian Authority applies to goods produced in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

France24 - International pressure mounts over Hamas killing

    AFP - Pressure mounted on Israel Thursday as Australia became the latest country seeking answers over the use of Western passports in the Dubai killing by suspected Mossad agents of a top Hamas militant.
     
    And France said that the suspected killers had stolen the identities of French citizens and used three forged French passports to travel to Dubai.
     
    The passports were "clearly forged" allowing the "impersonation of French citizens," foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told reporters.
