John Wayne Day scrapped over race row

Plans to declare 26 May as John Wayne Day in California have been rejected over racist comments the actor made when he was alive.
The Oscar-winner made his name playing tough cowboys and heroic soldiers in films including The Alamo, True Grit and The Green Berets.

But in a State Assembly vote several legislators objected to having a day commemorating his birthday due to his "disturbing views towards race".

The resolution was lost by 35-20 votes.

Republican State Assemblyman Matthew Harper had put forward the proposal, following a Texas resolution commemorating Wayne's birthday passed last year. Wayne died in 1979, aged 72.

Assemblyman Luis Alejo was among those against the proposal, citing a 1971 interview the actor made with Playboy where he was quoted as saying: "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."  :|

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez also cited the same interview where Wayne defended white Europeans' encroachment on Native American land.

"Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves," the actor said.  :|

Wayne's support for the anti-communist House Un-American Activities Committee and the far right John Birch Society were also brought up.

'Political correctness'

After the defeat Mr Harper said the proposal failed due to "the orthodoxy of political correctness".

"Opposing the John Wayne Day resolution is like opposing apple pie, fireworks, baseball, the Free Enterprise system and the Fourth of July," he said.

Assemblyman Travis Allen was among those who supported the proposal, saying Wayne "stood for those big American values that we know and we love".

And Assemblyman Donald Wagner pointed out others had been honoured despite controversies in their past, mentioning President Franklin Roosevelt who had been honoured despite his internment of Japanese Americans during World War Two.

The John Wayne Day row comes a week after it was announced the face of former US president and slave owner Andrew Jackson would be removed from the front of the US $20 bill and be replaced by freed slave and anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman.

Also this month Princeton University announced it would keep former President Woodrow Wilson's name on one of its buildings despite calls to remove it because he was a segregationist and held racist views.

The university decided that President Wilson's accomplishments deserved to be recognised along with his faults.

Police officer shoots cat

There is outrage after a police officer shot an injured cat.

A 911 call reporting an injured cat in a yard ended up with the cat dead of a gunshot wound.  It happened in North Catasauqua, just north of Allentown, Penn. The cat's name was Sugar, and she lived with her owner just a few doors down.

"She knew her name," said owner Tom Newhart. "If you'd call her, she'd come to you."

A North Catasauqua policeman responded to the call and evaluated the situation. According to the Northampton District Attorney, the cop noted injuries to the cat's hind legs and that she was trailing blood. He made the decision then and there to put the cat down.
"Officer Purcell made a decision to -- in his judgment -- humanely end the cat's life and suffering," announced Northampton DA John Morganelli, at a news conference. "Officer Purcell fired a single shot from his department-issued .38 caliber service revolver, instantly killing the cat."

And that's when the fur started flying.

The policeman "really didn't show any compassion or common sense knowledge," in the situation, Newhart said at the office of his attorney, Jenna Fliszar. He added that the officer didn't follow the law in regards to Sugar's shooting. Local law allows for police to euthanize an animal once two people have agreed that the severity of the injury warrants it.

Morganelli announced on Monday that he is citing the officer in question, a consequence equivalent to a parking ticket. Morganelli said his investigation revealed that Sugar wasn't as seriously injured as initially believed, and a veterinarian's postmortem report showed that Sugar wasn't hurt much at all, save for the gunshot wound.

Newhart and his attorney are considering attempting civil recourse.

Ja sam bio zapanjen da je neko ko je toliko kvalitetan uopste primljen na drzavnu televiziju pa i time da je i dalje u zemlji.

Decko je tada (pocetak nasih ratova) mozda imao 30 godina, crne kratko podsisane kose, suv i relativno visok, uvek u sakou.

Pareza bi mozda znao ko je to.

Седео сам с њим на кафи пре два/три месеца. И даље улети за симултанку (жалио се како га је зезнуо Хашки судија при изрицању пресуде Шекију), има своју фирму мада је породични човек, мени поручио да ми ово сад (30-40) најбоље време за то што сам улетео у предузетничке воде, да сада гризем и гањам док имам енергије.

Kao da je subject matter (taj sukob, uzroke, porive, posledice, ratna i mirovnjacka stremljenja itd. ali i finer things in life) poznavao bolje od cele te bulumente ludaka.

Da, stvarno: otkud mi ideja da lice koje je bar 10 godina svakodnevno bilo u Javnom Domenu, i cije sam ime i prezime znao ali zaboravio (mada nisam siguran da su i milioni drugih gradjana i tzv. gradjana tzv. Srbije zaboravili), moze imati takvu neku preokupaciju; privatnost, pfffft.

Evo, reci mi to na Messages, ako te vec iritira javnost. Sta mislis da cu ja da uradim sa tom informacijom; da mu posaljem crvene beretke na vrata??
